The Leadership Journey

I still remember my first leadership role, I played it cool pretending I knew exactly what I was doing, but underneath that cool, calm exterior I was thinking “what have I got myself into?”

I’d seen leaders before; I’d created an image in my mind of what sort of leader I wanted to be; perhaps more importantly, what sort of leader I didn’t want to be. However, no one tells you what you need to do, there’s lots of ideologies out there, but the reality is leadership can be hard. Sometimes you have to make tough decisions, but over the years I have learnt the following. Maybe these learning’s will help you on your leadership journey.

    1. Don’t be afraid to admit when you don’t know something or when you’re wrong
    2. Empower your team to make their own decisions and trust them when they make them
    3. Be consistent in your approach – your team need to know exactly where they stand
    4. Understand the importance of communication and take the time to understand the communication styles of those you interact with
    5. Be approachable – always have time for your team. However, encourage them to come to you with solutions. Then share your thoughts.
    6. Take the time to share your knowledge and expertise to support the growth of your team members. Understand that one of the best things you can do as a leader, is to build future leaders.
    7. Don’t be afraid to make difficult decisions. When you do, be transparent around the how and why.
    8. Invest a significant amount of your time working with leaders to ensure collaboration across the entire organisation – meaning ideas and solutions can be implemented quickly, with little resistance, allowing the organisation to adapt to constant changes.

Leadership is a constant learning journey, no one ever perfects it, but the best leaders never stop learning.
